Why is "food waste prevention" more important than composting?

(Return to Home)

While composting is very valuable, it is lower on the waste management hierarchy (right) than source reduction

With source reduction, the waste never exists in the first place and there is reduced demand for resources from the natural environment.  There is also cost savings by avoiding unnecessary purchases.

Composting, on the other hand, diverts the food waste to a better use than landfilling it, but it does not eliminate the upstream resource consequences associated with creating the waste in the first place.
